Just above the Sonoma County line, California's fabled Redwood Empire has been a source of old-vine Zinfandel for almost as long. Given its more northerly location, higher elevation, and canyonlike conduits to the coast, this is the coolest of our Zin regions, with a slightly shorter growing season. The upshot: bright, pretty, juicy wines that have weight without being heavy, showing a somewhat leaner structure that really comes into its own with food. Blessed with bracing, lively flavors that cascade through the realm of wild berries and black cherries, this could almost be called a European-style Zin.
